ist1_794750_angled_tennis...the 'Autumn Afternoon' was (again!) blessed with glorious sunshine and an excellent entry of 58 players!

The Stockport Express trophies were up for grabs and some top tennis saw John Abbott & Adam Tomlinson (Greave/Davenport) take the U18s from runners up Charlotte Sykes & Sally Lynn (Davenport/Ryecroft) - the girls once again competing strongly in the boys event!

The U15 Boys event saw a strong field reduced to a final between Matt Laird & Lewis Newstead (Macclesfield) and the home pairing of Keiran Cronin & Angus Roberts - Matt and Lewis running out worthy winners!

The final match in the Girls U12s group saw both the top pairs with three wins out of three - the Stockport Express trophy awaiting the winners - the home pair of Gabby McKeever & Erica Sanders taking top prize from runners up Rona Mackenzie & Eilidh Gawley (Northern).

The afternoon was completed with the presentation of prizes to this year's Grand Prix prize winners!

Well done to John Abbott, Marcus McNulty, Eilidh Gawley and Lucas Taylor!

Thanks to all at Bramhall Lane for hosting a very successful event!

And so the 2008 season comes to an end - the 50th Annual Tournament year and the largest one day tournament programme yet!

Thanks to all the players and their entourages that have made the season so successful and to all the clubs and their teams who have been so hospitable to us.

Thanks to all the League teams, players and junior organisers and helpers who make our League such a strong presence in the area giving hundreds of junior players their first taste of competitive tennis!

And finally, thanks to all the members of the League Committee who keep the whole thing moving throughout the year - time to put our feet up for a few weeks before the preparations start for next year!

See you all in 2009 - the AGM/Fixtures Meeting is set for Tuesday 10 February - bet you can't wait!

ist1_545958_tennis_net...and the sun shone down on us all on the wonderful lawns of Bowdon LTC as the One Day Tournament team pitched up to get the first Junior League event at Bowdon under way!

A superb entry of 56 players made the most of the fine conditions and served up a fine days' tennis - matched by the Bowdon catering team who served up some equally fine refreshments!

The Myra Nevett Trophy went to the winners of the U18 Boys event - John Abbott and Adam Tomlinson (Greave/Davenport) who fought off a strong challenge from the Mellor pairing of Marcus McNulty and James Russell.

Sadly, once again, the U18 Girls entry comprised only one pair - the redoubtable Charlotte Sykes and Sally Lynn, who again battled bravely against the boys!

The U15 Girls saw Lauren Hepburn and Chloe Chan (Hale Barns) dominate the event with the home pairing of Grace Breen and Lucy Hyde in runners-up spot.

The Northern overcame Didsbury in the Boys U15s with Ross Mackenzie and James Donnelly getting the better of brothers Martin and Robert Benson-May, whilst the U12 Boys saw a home win with Tom Warren and Miles Safiruddin from the Bowdon club taking first place with the Alderley Edge pair of Michael Leatherbarrow and James Ruddock in second.

An impressive line up in the U12 Girls event completed the day with a final that went to the very last sudden death point! Manon Steyaert and Megan Johns (Alderley Edge) just scraped home over Eilidh Gawley and Rona Mackenzie (Northern) in an exciting decider!

Thanks are due to the members of Bowdon LTC for making their marvellous facilities available to our event and to the helpers on the day who put in a fine effort and made us all very welcome!

It was also great to see so many new faces - we hope you enjoyed some competitive tennis and we hope you will join us at Bramhall Lane at 12.30 on Sunday 12 October for our 'Autumn Afternoon' tournament.

Boys and Girls doubles for U18, U15 and U12 age groups - the last event of the 2008 Programme!

ist1_807312_tennis_balls_macro...maybe it was the poor weather forecast or the start of the new school term - a rather poor entry of only five pairs contested Round 6 of the Grand Prix at Woodside on Saturday.

That said, the field was brimming with quality and the small (but perfectly formed!) crowd witnessed a feast of tennis!

So high was the standard that no one team dominated proceedings and after each team had completed their four hard matches, three pairs finished on 3 wins each!

'Games won' had to separate them and in the final analysis Kieran Cronin and Claire Wallace (Bramhall Lane) edged out Ross Mackenzie and Polly Harlow (Northern) by just one game!

Joe Bradley and Jayne Wallace (Bramhall Lane) took third spot with Jack Walton and Jess Armstrong (Bramhall Lane) in fourth.  A special mention is reserved for the local Woodside pairing of Matt Rogers and Jenni Bailey who fought hard throughout!

The Myra Nevett Cup was presented to the winners.

Thanks are due to the Woodside club for providing their excellent facilities to our event!

We look forward to seeing all players at the final leg of the Grand Prix Series at Bowdon LTC on Sunday 21 September - boys and girls doubles for U18, U15 and U12 - signing in at 9.30am - and then at the 'Autumn Afternoon' event at Bramhall Lane LTC on Sunday 12 October from 12.30pm.

Youatt Cup - Day 2 PDF Print
Written by David Sykes
Tuesday, 09 September 2008

Luckily, only a short time was lost to the weather on Day 2 enabling all matches to be completed.

A repeat of the 2007 final saw Bramhall Lane retain the trophy for the 4th year running - edging out The Northern by 3 sets to 2!

Congratulations to the winning squad - Kieran Cronin, Robert Downey, Jack Walton, Rebecca Griffiths, Gabrielle McKeever and Jessica Armstrong.

Well done also to the runners up - Ross Mackenzie, Callum Worrall, Polly Harlow and Alex Herd!

In the 3rd/4th place playoff between the losing semi-finallists, Prestbury needed a deciding set of mixed doubles to overcome the challenge from Hale Barns, denying them a repeat of last year's 3rd place.

Thanks to all the players who have provided a sparkling weekend of tennis for the spectators!

Thanks also to the North East Cheshire League for their kind sponsorship and to all at Bramhall Lane for their support and the use of their facilities!

The day was rounded off by the presentation of the Cup and the players' commemorative medals - conducted by our friend Susie Wright, Tennis Chair at Bramhall Lane LTC

We look forward to seeing everyone at our next One Day (Grand Prix) Tournament at Woodside LTC, High Lane, on Saturday 13 September at 9.30am for a Mixed Doubles event for U18s, U15s and U12s!

The weather was very kind to the players at Bramhall Lane today as the 2008 Youatt Cup got underway.

Teams from Hale, Davenport, Bramhall Queensgate, Greave, Bowdon, Bowdon Bowling and Albert all made a great contribution to Day 1 but the teams from Bramhall Lane, Prestbury, Hale Barns and The Northern were ultimately successful and will contest the semi-finals tomorrow!

Thanks to all the players and supporters who made today a success and we hope to see as many of you as possible tomorrow to complete the event!
