Bramhall Lane One Day Tournament Results

32 boys and 10 girls pitched up to Bramhall Lane for the final One Day tournament of the 2009 Season.

As usual this season, by far the biggest section was the U15 Boys who on this occasion were joined by 2 pairs of U18s. Three Round Robin groups were played to determine the positions in the knock out draw and after some good competitive play the first semi saw home club pairing Angus Roberts and Rob Downey edged out by Bramhall Lane's Jack Walton and Poynton's Adam Costello on a tie break. The second semi saw the home pair of Kieran Cronin and Yan Ali-Simoen beaten by Bramhall Queensgate's Jon Bowe and Will Dent. Despite a substantial 'size' advantage, Walton and Costello took the day's top prize with a determined 4/2 win in the Final!

The U12 Girls event, an all Bramhall Lane affair, ended with Aneesha Adlington and Annie Wilson-Knight on top with Emily Wilson-Knight and Isobel Robins in second and Jade Carpenter and Molly Hanson in third. Well done girls!

The U12 Boys were joined by two pairs of girls - Penny Jones & Georgia Roberts (Bramhall Lane) and Francesca Bailey & Jenni Bailey (Bramhall Lane/Woodside). After the group stages, the girls faced each other in the quarter finals with Francesca & Jenni moving on to the semis where they came up against Lewis Denton & Sam Perry (Prestbury/Alderley Edge) with the boys proving too strong on the day. In the other semi, Sam Walton & James Taylor (Prestbury) edged past Ben Hughes & Ed Durrant (Bowdon/Prestbury) to reach the final. A great final saw Sam & James top the field with a narrow victory in a tie-break decider.

Thanks to all the players for a great afternoon of tennis in good spirits! Thanks also to the Bramhall Lane club for their usual hospitality!

The day was a good end to what has been a good season. We're off to hibernate for a little while, to recharge the batteries and to get ready for the 2010 season!  See you all next year!

Bowdon One Day Tournament Results

The weather again made its best efforts and bathed the Bowdon courts in sunshine for the second year running, bringing 48 players to the event!

Boys again outnumbered the girls by 3 to 1 with the largest section being the U12 boys - 11 pairs started the round robin stages and were reduced to a closely fought final between Sam Perry & Oliver Pooler (Alderley Edge) and Ben Hughes & Edward Durrant (Bowdon/Prestbury) with Sam & Oliver coming out on top 5/3.

5 pairs of U15 boys mixed with 2 pairs of U18s and the U15s came out on top with the home pair of Nick Howarth & Oscar Bamford edging out Bramhall Lane's Rob Downey & Angus Roberts in another 5/3 final.

The U15 and U12 girls joined into one round robin group - Bowdon's Maria Jackson & Grace Breen taking top prize with a clean sweep. Emily Lyons & Georgia Webb took the U12 trophies with Anya Denton & Isobel Watson in runners up spot - both pairs representing the home club!

Thanks to the Bowdon club and members for welcoming us again and providing excellent facilities and catering for the players and referees alike!

Woodside One Day Tournament Results

An enjoyable day was held at the Mixed Doubles event at Woodside on Saturday 12 September despite attracting only a small field of 6 couples. An all age group 'Open' round robin event was played (with a little handicapping helping the younger players!) The strong pairing of Bramhall Lane's Kieran Cronin and Maisie Billson dominated the event with 5 wins and deservedly took away the Myra Nevett Trophy, presented by Myra's son, Andy Nevett, on behalf of the Woodside club.

Runners up, with 3 wins, were Penny Jones and Josh Glover, again from Bramhall Lane, who were presented with a Myra Nevett Trophy and also, as the 'winners' of the U12 event within the Open event, received the Mike Hattan Trophy which was carried over from the Mixed Doubles event at West Heaton earlier in the season which had to be cancelled due to bad weather.

Our thanks are extended to Andy Nevett and the Woodside club for their hospitality and some much needed sunshine!

The Youatt Cup, the league's annual U13 event hosted at Prestbury Village LTC, concluded today (Sunday 6 September).

12 teams were reduced to four after the first day's play with The Albert, Bowdon, Bramhall Lane and The Northern moving through into the semi-finals.

The Albert team of Rona Mackenzie, Sarah Strickland, Ben Grant and James Pickersgill took on Bowdon and moved comfortably into the final where they were to face The Northern - represented by the second Mackenzie, Ross, James Donnolly, Alexandra Herd and Lauren Guilfoyle who saw off a strong challenge from Bramhall Lane.

The final saw The Northern dominate, taking the trophy for the loss of just four games in the four sets.

Well done to all the finalists, and in particular to The Northern who proved worthy winners!

The prizes were presented by our special guest, Mr Peter Brown, representing our kind sponsors, the Slazenger North East Cheshire League and Junior League Chairman, Peter Nugent, thanked our senior friends for their excellent sponsorship of the event. He also extended thanks to the members of Prestbury Village LTC for providing the facilities and, in particular, for the first class catering!

See you all at our upcoming events - Woodside Mixed Doubles on Saturday 12 September from 9.30am and Boys and Girls doubles at Bowdon LTC on Sunday 20 September from 9.30am!

BRAMHALL QUEENSGATE ONE DAY TOURNAMENT RESULTS

44 players arrived at Bramhall Queensgate on a sunny day - much welcomed after last year's washout!

As is usual this season, the largest entry was in the U15 Boys event with 12 pairs competing. Three round robin groups produced 6 pairs to go through to the knock out stages and after two quarter finals, the semis saw Rob Downey (Bramhall Lane) and our favourite Spanish visitor, Telmo Blakemore (San Sebastian) up against the powerful pairing of Ross Mackenzie and Myles Anderson (Heyes Grove). In the other semi, Hale's Oliver Chesses and Adam Tomlinson faced Adam Costello (Poynton) and Sam Hanson (Bramhall Lane). Two competitive matches resulted in Ross & Myles edging through to face Oliver & Adam in the final. The final, the best match of the day, sent the spectators home happy with Ross & Myles taking top honours with a 6/4 win in a tight match.

In the U12 event, three boys pairs clashed with three girls pairs! After two round robin groups, the two semi finals saw Rona Mackenzie & Polly Harlow (Northern) ease past the younger team of Francesca Bailey (Bramhall Lane) & Jenni Bailey (Woodside), whilst Michael Armstrong & Josh Glover (Bramhall Lane) overcame their club rivals Max Hanson & Sam Carpenter. In the final, Rona and Polly completed a good day's work with a comfortable victory!

The U18 Boys event featured four pairs competing in a round robin group with the final group match proving to be the final of the event. In a best of three set decider, Matt Pilling & Will Archer (West Heaton) proved too strong for the Didsbury brothers, Rob & Martin Benson-May, and won in straight sets.

Thanks to all the competitors and for the hospitality of the club members - the spectators were treated to some excellent tennis and they were well catered for by Judith Clayman and her team of helpers who kept the food and drink flowing!

See you all next year!

BRAMHALL LANE ONE DAY SINGLES TOURNAMENT RESULTS

A large entry of 63 players and supporters enjoyed sunny weather (and a busy day for the referees) at Bramhall Lane in the one day singles event!

As expected, the U15s Boys provided the largest entry with 21 players and after 5 round robin groups and 6 knock out matches, four semi-finallists were still in the running. The first semi saw Joe Bradley (Bramhall Lane) overcome his home rival David Ashcroft giving the home club one place in the final but the second semi saw Northern's Ross Mackenzie edge past Bramhall Lane's Kieran Cronin, Ross going on to take top honours with a 4-2 win in the final!

2 round robin groups in the U15 Girls event ended with semi finals between Rebecca Griffiths and Jess Armstrong (Bamhall Lane) and Claire Wallace (Bramhall Lane) and Rona Mackenzie (Northern). Claire and Rebecca moved through to the final where Claire took the first prize.

The U18 Boys event attracted a strong entry and after 3 round robin groups four players emerged into the semis - in the first, Max Teeling (David Lloyd) overcame Tom Grant (Cheadle Kingsway) to move into the final. The second went all the way - Alex Graver (New Mills) needing a deciding tie break to battle past John Abbott (Hazel Grove). The final saw Max triumph with a 4-1 margin.

Thee Bramhall Lane players contested the U18 Girls event. Rebecca Griffiths topped the group ahead of runner up Jayne Wallace with Kim Lawrence in third.

11 entrants in the Boys U12s battled hard through the group stages. In the semis, Matthew Walton (Lindow) overcame Joe Burnett (Hale Barns)and went on to take first place in the final over Bramhall Park's James Graham who edged past Yann Al Simeon (Bramhall Lane) into the final.

The U10 Girls event ended with three players winning three matches out of four - with the result having to be decided on games won, Georgina Dare (Bramhall Lane) topped the group ahead of Woodside's Jenni Bailey with Francesca Bailey (Bramhall Lane) in 3rd place.

A group of 5 contested the U10 Boys event - this time with a clear winner - home club member Michael Armstrong winning all four of his matches. Archie Wild was the clear runner up, also from Bramhall Lane, winning 3 out of 4.

Our usual thanks are due to our excellent hosts at Bramhall Lane!

See you all at our next events - the Annual Tournament at Alderley Edge - and the next one day tournament - doubles at Bramhall Queensgate - 9.30am on Saturday 8 August!

SALE ONE DAY TOURNAMENT RESULTS

An entry of 30 players braved a dreadful weather forecast and survived (just a little wetter) at Sale!

The Boys U15/18 event saw three groups of contenders whittled down to a semi final line up. John Abbott and Michael Belshaw (Hazel Grove & Ryecroft Park) edged past Hale's Dan Senior and David Jones to meet Tom Hebden and Ben Eastwood (a Bramhall Lane & Bramhall Queensgate partnership) in the final - they needed to overcome the challenge of Rona Mackenzie and Faye Worrall who bravely challenged the boys and made the semis!

A competitive final saw John & Michael come through 6-4 after a tight set of good tennis.

Three pairs contested the U12s section - Francesca Bailey & Jenni Bailey (Bramhall Lane/Woodside), Nick Giraud & Matt Walton (Lindow) and Sam Carpenter & Max Hanson (Bramhall Lane).  Nick and Matt took the winners prize with Sam and Max in runners up. Francesca and Jenni battled hard and took the Girls prize!

Thanks to the Sale club for their hospitality!

KNUTSFORD ONE DAY TOURNAMENT RESULTS

56 players hit Knutsford for the One Day Tournament on Sunday 21 June.

As seems usual these days, the boys were in the majority but the eight girls produced some good tennis in their group with Ava Johnston and Emily Spencer (Alderley Edge) topping the group from runners up Rona Mackenzie and Faye Worrall (The Northern).

The Boys U12s final saw Joe Burnett and Henry Cox (Hale Barns) overcome the home pairing of Lenny Turner and Jonny Jamison.

The U15s was the largest entry with 10 pairs - after the group stages and semi finals, the Bramhall Queensgate pairing of Sam Hanson and Jonny Hall took top honours from Bowdon's Mark Upton and Joe Shalom.

The U18s left the best match of the day to the final when Didsbury's Martin & Robert Benson-May edged out the Hazel Grove/Ryecroft team of John Abbott and Michael Belshaw.

Thanks to Debbie and her team at Knutsford for their hospitality - see you next year!

WEST HEATON ONE DAY TOURNAMENT

Sadly, the weather proved unbeatable at West Heaton last Saturday and the event had to be abandoned.

In the only play of the afternoon, two brave pairs of U15s took to the court to play a consolation match with Bramhall Lane's Jessica Armstrong and Jack Walton proving too strong on the day for Greave's Caroline and Rob Ward.

Coffee and cookies kept the organisers happy - thanks to Jane and the West Heaton team!

Let's hope the weather is kinder at our next event - the Knutsford One Day Tournament for boys and girls doubles U18/U15/U12 - signing in at 9.30am on Sunday 21st June.

ALDERLEY EDGE ONE DAY STARTER TOURNAMENT RESULTS

A good entry of 52 players brushed aside the occasional downpour and enjoyed the afternoon at Alderley Edge last Sunday!

In the U18 section, Adam Tomlinson and John Abbott (Davenport/Hazel Grove) followed up their success at Ryecroft to take their second title of the season. Ben Bailey and James Beagan (Brabyns) were runners up on the day, with Rick Bull and Sam Dixon (Pownall Park) in third place.

Nine teams contested the U12 section with the home pairing of Oliver Pouler and Sam Perry taking top honours ahead of runners up Nick Giraud and Matt Walton (Lindow).

Once again, the U15 was the biggest section with 13 pairs of boys plus the only girls pair, Rachel Barlow and Beth Hitchen (Congleton), who did well and finished as runners up in the consolation event behind Greave's Alex Morrell and David Bennett.

The main U15 event was won by Barnaby Dykstra (Alderley Edge) and Ed Rowland (Knutsford)  ahead of Bramhall Lane's Jack Walton and Alex Crispin.

Thanks to all the players and supporters who made the event a success even when the weather caused a few delays!

Footnote: The entry at Alderley Edge was 50 boys and 2 girls! Message to coaches and club volunteers - please encourage the girls to come and try our one day tournaments - an ideal place to try competitive tennis!

RYECROFT ONE DAY TOURNAMENT RESULTS

28 players braved the sunshine at Ryecroft Park last Saturday (9 May) and kicked off their individual 'Champions Race' seasons!

In the U12 Girls event, Rona Mackenzie & Fay Worrall (Northern) headed the small field with Francesca Bailey and Georgina Dare (Bramhall Lane) proving determined runners-up. The U18 Boys trophies went to John Abbott and Adam Tomlinson (Haxel Grove/Davenport) ahead of runners-up Michael Belshaw and Jordan Roberts, competing on home turf.

Ryecroft players dominated the Boys U15 competition with Faris McGrath and Tim Whitehead taking the honours over runners-up Joe Abushal and James Sugden.

Thanks to all the entrants and to our welcoming hosts at Ryecroft Park for an excellent start to the Tournament season!

At a Committee Meeting tonight, glasses of wine were raised in memory of our friend and fellow committee colleague, Judy Alexander, who passed away suddenly last week.
